Weedmaps Docuseries ‘Tumbleweeds with Killer Mike’ To Premier on 4/20

Weedmaps will debut a new four-part documentary series called Tumbleweeds with Killer Mike April 20 on VICE TV and the VICE streaming app. Featuring the rapper and activist Killer Mike, known famously for five full-length solo albums and his involvement with numerous musical acts, specifically Run the Jewels.

The show follows Killer Mike as he explores four major cannabis industry hubs—Las Vegas, San Francisco, New York and Chicago—to explore and showcase the local cannabis culture of each region. Episodes feature artists such as Jocelyn Chia and Fab 5 Freddy.

In an email interview with Forbes, Weedmaps operator and CEO of WM Technology Chris Beals shared insight regarding the origin of this series. “As a leader in the space for almost 14 years, it’s incumbent on us to help shift old and, in many ways, inaccurate perceptions of the plant. This is doubly critical when you consider that despite the fact you see growing legal cannabis markets, we still have thousands of people still in jail simply for possessing cannabis,” Beals said. “We continue to seek opportunities to both educate and change attitudes through creative content, and Tumbleweeds with Killer Mike is no different. This docuseries is yet another way for consumers to learn about the impact of cannabis through the lens of comedy and community in different U.S. cities.”

Beals also shared that Killer Mike was an obvious choice to have as the host of the series, in part because of his social media following but also his strong cannabis stance as well. “He was an easy choice when we looked for someone who could really carry the show and guide viewers on his visit to each of the U.S. cities that we highlight,” Beals added.

He concluded that education is essential to both understand the current state of the industry as well as the path forward. “It is important that this series showcases the culture of different cities, their interconnectedness to the history of cannabis, and ultimately, legalization. Tumbleweeds works to highlight the economic and societal impacts of cannabis, as well as the revenue and business opportunities in cities where both medicinal and recreational use are legal,” Beals said. “Our hope is that viewers take what they learn and support a more equitable and open legal cannabis economy. This holds especially true as more states legalize cannabis.”

The series is being created and produced by Wheelhouse, which is also the company behind 1922, Once Upon a Time in Queens, State of Pride and many more.

Tumbleweeds with Killer Mike is a welcome cannabis-focused film project amidst other entertainment options releasing on or around April 20, including Russian Doll Season 2 on Netflix, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent featuring Nicholas Cage, Pedro Pascal, Tiffany Hadish and Neil Patrick Harris. But interesting and relevant entertainment isn’t limited to releasing during the 4/20 window; Oscar nominated short film Please Hold, featuring a disturbing narrative about a man who is incarcerated through a completely automated system, is available now on HBO Max.

Many live 4/20 events are also returning this year, including The Roll Up Music & Community Earth Day Celebration (featuring live acts like Wiz Khalifa, Method Man, Redman and Waka Flocka Flame) in Massachusetts April 15-17; The Smoker’s Club Festival in San Bernardino, California April 30; and Sweetwater 420 Fest in Atlanta, Georgia April 29-May 1.
